Excel files opening in 2007 rather than 2010

I have both versions - Excel 2007 and Excel 2010 - on my computer running Win 7 Pro SP1 64 bit. When I receive a spreadsheet via email, it used to open in Excel 2010, which is my preference, but lately it opens in Excel 2007, as do others on my hard drive if I just double-click the icon. I have tried to change the file association, but I only see Excel -- I can't seem to get to a place to prefer 2010 over 2007. I don't want to have to uninstall 2007, because I teach classes in this version. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Could try the file association using the Office14 folder's Excel.exe file.

    can't find Excel.exe

Okay, I can't find Excel.exe. When I search my computer, it says it is here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12. But when I navigate there from the File Associations window, there are no .exe files. And, as you point out, it should be in \Office14, but there are no .exe files there either. I have Folder Options set so file extensions show.

I used Windows Explorer, and here is a screen shot of my Office14 folder -- no EXE files.

How do you open Excel 2010?

What are the Properties of your choice (Desktop icon, All Programs, etc.) to open Excel 2010?

    You need to look in:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
    rather than:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

I would try doing a repair of 2010 from Control Panel - that should hopefully reset it as the default version.

    repair worked!

Thank you for the excellent suggestion to repair Office 2010. That has done the trick! I am grateful for your help, and grateful to have Windows Secrets Lounge as a resource when I get stuck!
