I have this feature turned on. I double click on a file in Explorer; it opens; I save it then close it. This file does not show up in the list of recently used files. What's up?
Thanks for your help.

I believe a file shows up in the recently used files list only if it is opened from Excel but on if it is opened from Explorer.
As cpod said when open with Explorer a file does not find it's way onto the Recently Used list. However you can force it do so by using Saving As (instead of Save), and overwrite the older version.
