    Custom DNS setting disappearing!

    Hi -I prefer to use custom DNS setting rather than those set automatically by my ISP.

    However, the custom IPv4 DNS setting I input and save in Win7 keep "disappearing" and the connection is reset to automatically detect.

    Is this a Win7 bug, a misconfig on my part other something more suspicious.

    Running Win 7 Home Prof SP1.

    Many thanks for any insights.

    Is your account a member of the admin group?

    Have you run malware scans?

    Are you running Win7 Home or Win7 Pro?

    Hi Joe

    1) The PC only has 1 user, me, and the account is Administrator
    2) Win 7 Prof Home SP1
    3) Run Norton 360 and Immunet (Full) - however being the eternal pessimist I've downloaded Malwarebytes and am currently doing a scan.

    Many thanks

    John, their is no need to change your PC's settings to use DNS of your choice, just enter the primary & secondary numbers in your router.

    @Joe

    Scan was clean

    @Roderunner
    Understood and that's the case at my office but as the unit is a laptop and in the original "boondocks" of the Philippines I need to be able to select DNS settings manually when on the move.

    John, as its a laptop, it all depends on the network your connecting to in what the DNS server is.
    If you run NameBench ( which requires no installation ) it will show the DNS server in use on the network your connected to.

    Roderunner - I use namebench to tell me what DNS servers are best to use. Problem is after I plug in those servers Win 7 deletes them after hibernation/sleep/restart.

    I want to keep the DNS setting I want to use and not the ones ISP provides.

    John, the only way to do it is, access the router whilest connected to that network and change them.

    Sorry Roderunner - I think we're at odds here! ;-)

    I need to keep my custom settings on my laptop - the router settings at my office and house are OK.

    In XP and until recently on Win7 I could tell my laptop connections which DNS to use - eg OpenDNS or Googles 8888 DNS. What's happening now is that those custom DNS settings are being deleted from my Win7 laptop when I want them there permanently.

    "Until recently"? Have you tried a system restore to a time when it was working correctly?

    What has changed on your PC? New software? Patches?

    Do you have your IPv4 set to use DHCP? If this is set, the DNS setting may change whenever there is an ipconfig refresh. I don't know for that is the case, but I have run Win 7 with DHCP off, used a static IP address and manually added DNS servers. This worked fine for me.
