Can't browse web, skype, torrents ok

My daughters win7 laptop is unable to browse the internet - pages just time out. This includes all WAN pages, and the local router config page.

She's connected to our wireless lan OK - skype and utorrent are working. If I look at the router there are no access restrictions for her PC, and DHCP has assigned her an IP address.

I've tried Chrome and IE browsers, and 2 different wireless networks - same result for all combinations.

She has avast antivirus, and is I think, using the Windows 7 firewall. I'm not familiar with w7, but I assume the firewall is on - or the security centre would be throwing a fit.

It has to be a setting on the laptop - perhaps one thats blocking tcp traffic?

Any suggestions as to where I could look?

    Thanks

    Welcome to the Lounge!!

In IE check Tools | Internet Options | Connections (tab) | Lan Settings (button). Make sure none of the boxes are checked.

I think the Lan Settings should be set to Automatically Detect Settings, at least that is how my is set up. No other check marks.

I've seen automatically detect settings do some strange things. Particularly if you have wired and wireless connectivity available. I'd rather choose the settings and not have them changed.

Perhaps I'll try to uncheck that as well and see if there are any changes. Thanks Joe.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll look at those settings this evening and let you know how it goes.
