Right Click Not Working Correctly

When I right click a desk top icon I only see a "ghost" image of the right click menu until I move the cursor and then it brightens up and I can make a selection. Then when I scroll down the right click menu and click a choice such as PROPERTIES or CUT or COPY, this item stays on the screen even after I left click and exit. I am using Dell Vostro 220, 1.5 GHz, Windows XP SP3, 2GB RAM

Does this behavior survive a reboot?

Have you updated any drivers recently?

Reboot does not matter. No drivers updated. It looks permanent and I am really puzzled.

Have you modified any "ease of access" settings?

Did this start after a patch was applied?

Have you tried a system restore to a time when you know it was working?

I have not done any ease of access. No I didn't do a restore because I would guess it's been like this for a couple of weeks. Probably to far back to do a restore. Thanks for the suggestion Joe. I actually have two of these computers sitting side by side and networked together. Only one has this problem.

You might need to update the video driver.

I just wanted to thank JoeP for the help. I actually just fixed my problem after two months of suffering and trying. Somehow the "Let windows choose what's best for my computer." in the advanced performance visual effects got unchecked. That was a "hair raiser" and shows how little I actually know about computers.
