Safe LAN Video, Chat and Text software?

Dear Windows Secrets forum readers, as a parent and grandparent I worry when my grandchildren visit and ask to use the Internet. I am a former military logistics and communications specialist and have since studied for a degree in IT and computing, which makes me even more worried at what children access on the net these days.

Does the forum, Windows Secrets team and editors know of a safe (possibly free) program that allows children and adults alike to chat safely over a LAN network, and if possible use our webcam to see what the children are doing. I use different levels and versions of Microsoft Windows from XP to Windows 7 Pro on my LAN and WAN network and use digital amateur radio satellites for space communications. I would like to text, chat and watch via LAN video application to each of the computer users whilst I work on my workstation whilst we each use my LAN group computers but in a safe environment away from the Internet.

I do not want a key logger function, just the ability to see, chat and text with any computer (Desktop or Laptop) user on my LAN using a safe video, chat and text link in a safe environment behind a firewall away from the Internet.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help and advice,

In my experience you can't stop people from accessing bad stuff on the internet, you can only provide a safe environment and educate them in what not to do.
    1. Make sure you have backups of your data and an anti virus suite.
    2. Keep the software up to date via Windows Update and Secunia PSI.
    3. Advise people that these days the only way to get a virus is to click Yes on boxes without reading and understanding the message displayed. Clicking No when you are not sure is best.
    4. Never disclose personal details on public web sites (Facebook etc). It's more fun to make stuff up as you go.
    5. Use a password manager to create different passwords for every site you visit. Then if one site is compromised you don't have to worry about other sites being attacked with your "standard" password.

Safe Hex is always best, but we all need to have fun.

    cheers, Paul

Thanks Chowur and PaulT; Chowus, the LAN programs look great thanks. Paul, everything you list is already done as standard on all networked computers and on the satellite tracking ground station computer too. Windows Update, Securia PSI 2.0 and Symantec AV and Firewall all run daily and hourly updates. I just needed a pruely LAN application so it stayed away from the Internet so everyone see and chat freely on the LAN away from prying eyes and minds but also gave the new users confidence. Totally agree with Safe Hex too. Thanks both for the help and advice, much appreciated.
