Thumbs down AVG Free train wreck

    Hi all:

Just a warning NOT to download AVG free 2011. It's been out for months and they still haven't fixed the problems with it. Apparently Win 7 has the most complaints, but I run XP and still, no updates will load and it keeps giving me 'general error' msgs.

I've gone back to 8.5 and will keep my fingers crossed. (finger crossing is a well-known
    techie trick)

Certainly contact them to report the issues. Still, if it continues, you could give MS Security Essentials a try. I'm using it on several machines and am very pleased with it.

I gave up some time ago on AVG...
It was getting more buggy with each new version and there have been a lot of PC's not being able to boot after installing certain versions..

I went with MSE and never looked back.

    Thanks both of you.

AVG has been aware of the problems since last fall, but has not gotten them fixed yet. I guess it's time to look for something I'll have to pay for. I suspect now that they're trying to get rid of all the free subscribers without the bad publicity of actually dumping us.

MSE didn't work on my machine, probably because of some of the old programs that I find essential to the way I work. Some probably go back into the mid 90s, and I suppose I'll have to find replacements some day soon, but want to put the day off as long as I can.

Maybe I'll try Kaspersky. Anyone tried that?

I use Ad-Aware (Free) on a couple of machines and Vipre (Paid) on another. Both seem fine to me.

With MSE you can exclude certain file types so maybe it's worth giving that a try....
