Win XP install fails on verify of Win 98 CD

Trying to install XP on an old PC. The XP SP2 upgrade CDROM boots fine, requests to look at the Win98 cdrom but can't find it. Neither can I boot off of it. Appears to read just fine in my usual machine.

    Odd.

I guess I could just clone the w98 disk and try again but if the master doesn't work what chance the clone will?

Any better suggestions? Is the xp install looking for some specific file(s) I could put on the HD or another CD?

    Suggestions welcome!

Do you mean that the XP install can't find the Win 98 CD in the optical reader, or just can't find the Win 98 installation on the C Drive? Do you still have the 98 on CD? If so put the CD in the Optical reader. The installation should see it there. If it can't see the CD in the optical reader, I would suspect the CD Drive is bad.

The Win XP CD is an upgrade CD - is the Win 98 CD also an upgrade CD? Trying to do an upgrade from an upgrade CD?

    1. Start the computer with any boot disk.

    2. Change to the XP cdrom drive.
    3. Go into the \i386 directory on the cdrom.
    4. Run WINNT.EXE to begin the install process

It can't find 98 on CD -- it was linux previously on the HD but I've repartitioned as this was confusing the XP install process.

If it can boot the XP CD -- and the UBCD too -- I'm suspecting that the drive is probably not bad.

This works, thanks. After doing the initial install to HD it can then verify the Win98 CD successfully. Most odd....

    Many thanks,
