    Figure and Table captions in main body of document and in appendices

    How can one use different levels of headings for different parts of a document for captions? I use Heading 1 in the main body for captions so that caption says Figure 1-1, for example.

    I use Heading 7 for Appendices so when I insert a caption in an appendix I tell it to use Heading 7 so that the caption says Figure A-1, but it always switches the captions in the main body of the document to use Heading 7 as well.

    Can this be done?

    It can be done but you need to avoid using the Insert Caption dialog since the pattern you apply there flushes through the rest of the document. There are some minor variations on how you might do this but this is the way I have recently used and it is working well.

    You will need to edit the field codes of the captions used in the Appendix area to get it working. The following text shows the results and the graphic shows the field codes necessary. Once you have the field codes set for a caption in the Appendix, add to your quick parts so you can add it quickly without bothering with the Insert Caption dialog.

    1. Heading 1
    Figure 1 1: InsertCaptionHere
    Figure 1 2: InsertCaptionHere
    Figure 1 3: InsertCaptionHere
    2. Heading 1
    Figure 2 1: InsertCaptionHere
    Figure 2 2: InsertCaptionHere
    Figure 2 3: InsertCaptionHere
    Appendix A. Appendix 1
    Figure A 1: InsertCaptionHere
    Figure A 2: InsertCaptionHere
    Figure A 3: InsertCaptionHere
    Appendix B. Appendix 1
    Figure B 1: InsertCaptionHere
    Figure B 2: InsertCaptionHere
    Figure B 3: InsertCaptionHere

    Basically, the Appendix Number comes from a styleref field with the code
    {STYLEREF "Appendix 1" \s}

    The figure number comes from a SEQ field as per the earlier captions but includes a restart at 1 switch for the first figure in each appendix.
    {SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \r 1}
    {SEQ Figure \* ARABIC}

    To edit the caption fields you select and press Shift-F9. After editing, press F9 to refresh the selected fields. If you already have a document with all the captions in there then you can run a simple search and replace to alter them - if you reveal codes first.

    Friendly reminder: Once you have done this to a document - DO NOT USE THE INSERT CAPTION DIALOG

    Edited:
    Since you are using Heading 7 for your appendices, the codes for your fields are simpler than my solution and should be modified in the following way
    {STYLEREF 7 \s} - {SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \s 7} - use this for all captions in Appendix Area
