It is, indeed, an huge download, but it's either that or through Windows update. If you have the bandwidth, go for it.

See Windows 7 SP1 is not offered in Windows Update and Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 SP1. I still recommend download the complete service pack and burning it to a DVD in case you ever have to reinstall Windows from scratch. Download either windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe (for a 32-bit install) or windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe (for a 63-bit install) from Windows 7 SP1 download details.

It is available on CD from MS for $5. worth it for those of us with download limits, and as Joe says, you have it if you ever need it again.

When SP1 is offered by Windows Update it only downloads the parts that it believes you need. I have had better luck downloading the complete service pack. There have been many others around the world that have used Windows Update to install SP1 successfully.

Dave, If you have the 64 Bit Win 7 then yes this is the one you want. I concur with Joe that I have had better luck with large, intricate downloads such as SP by downloading the entire file, then disconnecting from the internet, shutting down all other apps, including all my security apps before starting the install. Many of the problems encountered seem to have been due to Av apps causing conflicts during the updates.

If it installed OK you should be good to go. If something is missing you'll be offered a patch by Windows Update. You still should have a number of patches to apply that have been released since SP1.

That is the one advantage of Windows Update, it only downloads and installs what it believes you need. Mistakes can happen, but it's usually pretty reliable. I use Windows Update for the normal patch Tuesday updates, but prefer the file download for these big updates. Mainly because I want to disable my AV during the installation.
