    Can't show History

    I have XP , SP3, and IE8.

Lately, I cannot see any history. I try and do the drop-down history menu (in the address bar) and nothing happens. I think my settings are okay (I do not tell it to delete browsing history).

I suspect it is some simple setting somewhere.

(I do ue Zonealarm and Avira, free versions)

In your browser menu click on "Tools", then click on "Internet Options". In your "General" tab go to the "Browsing history" section and click on "Settings". There are various options for storing your history - for newer version of stored pages make sure "Automatically" is checked. Next, at the bottom of the window, specify how many days IE should save the list of websites you have visited - 20 is good. If those settings are already there, then someone, as the person above me has suggested, is deleting your browser history to hide their tracks!

I should also mention that some programs, such as CCleaner and Ad-Aware will wipe your history every time you use it. (In Ad-Aware there is an option you can choose in your settings to wipe your browser's history whenever you do a scan - CCleaner does it automatically).

    It must be something else

I am the only user of this laptop.

I can type in an URL and go to it.
I can then type in another URL and go to it.
    I can do it a 3rd time.

I am set to store history for 19 days.

Still, when I click the spot to show the history, nothing happens.

    Anything else I can try?

I rarely use Ad-Aware or CCleaner.

Make sure that the option “Delete browsing history on exit’ is unchecked. Let’s check if it helps.
    a. Click Start, type the following command in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    inetcpl.cpl
The Internet Options dialog box appears.
    b. In General tab, uncheck the option ‘Delete browsing history on exit’.
    c. Click on Apply & OK.

    Brute Force Solution

Well, I never did find the cause of the problem.

I finally got disgusted and just RESET IE 8.0.

That solved the problem and also got rid of an annoying ZoneAlarm toolbar.
