I'm certainly no expert, but can you get hold of a CDROM drive from a system that doesn't exhibit this behaviour?
Ewan
Good idea, but I also use a virtual CD drive - i.e. the image of the CD is on the hard drive and the software puts it into a virtual CD, and I still get the same problem with this.
My test was to run the same CD from the real CD and from the virtual drive, but both exhibit the problems mentioned in my first email
I've now sorted out the problem in Windows 98, therefore it's doesn't appear to be a hardware issue, but rather a variety of software problems. The article Q242937 from Microsoft's KB describes my problems almost exactly and I've been able to get the fix for this documented problem and it seems to now work.
However, the same article would also describe what I'm seeing in Windows 2000 Pro, but the same fix (updating a few of the .sys files) doesn't run in Win2K. I've also experimented with copying over the same files into Win2K, but on reboot they get replaced by the originals.
I realised that the hardware on my computer was okay, when I tried out my other removable hard drive with Windows XP RC2 installed. This ran all the CDs I tried earlier without a glitch, with either of the sound cards I'm using for testing.
The other KB articles that might be of interest are...Q247021, Q244320, Q289226, Q254354, Q242937, however Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 is meant to sort a few of these and I've got that installed.
