MS Security Essentials and Windows Defender

At the suggestion of one of your Windows Secrets writers, I just started using MS Security Essentials because NAV was causing my machine to hang up on shutdown. Before that I was also running Windows Defender with NAV.
Do your experts think that running Windows Defender adds anything to my security with MS Security Essentials installed?
    Thanks for you help.

    Welcome to the Lounge!!

MSE takes over the duties of Windows Defender. You should not see Windows Defender after installing MSE.

In point of fact MSE actually disables Windows Defender when you install it.
