Word 2010: How do I fill a line with dots ........ ?

Is there a trick to filling a line with dots (such as in a form to indicate where people need to write)?

I am wanting to do something like this:


First Name: ............................................. (to end of the line)
Surname: ...............................................(to end of the line)

etc...

I really would love to know how this is done, and since the form would go onto a web page, how can you do this there as well?

What you need to do is set a tab and then set it to Dot Leader via Format Tabs... .

Thanks for the tip.... How would you do that inside of a table layout, though? If you hit tab, you go to the next cell or the next line....?

Also, how do you get the dots to just go to the end of the line...... rather than a spot identified by the end of the tab?

Word is not a very good application for writing web forms. It is OK for printed forms and very good for online forms that are used with Word.

I don't think HTML has the concept of tab stops. Word's HTML converter will do something to try to emulate them, but the code may be very difficult to maintain without editing the Word doc and regenerating the HTML.

To type a tab within a table, use Shift-Tab (otherwise, the Tab just brings the focus to the next table cell).

The dot leader method does what you want, but can produce misaligned dots if several lines are close to each other and spanning between text and numbers (as in a table of contents). To get around this, type "space tab space" so the leader dot set is not 'locked' to the text around it.
