Can't open Properties dialog box in Word 2007

I want to view the properties of the document I have open in Word 2007. Office Help tells me to go to the Office button, click Prepare, and then click on Properties. But Properties is grayed out so nothing happens. I don't have this problem with new (unsaved) documents, just documents I've already saved.

Any ideas on how to fix?

I wonder if your old files have been opened in a compatability mode. I am running 2010 and old docs I open have certain features greyed out. I go to the Files tab (the Office button in 2007 I think) and there is an option to CONVERT. After conversion all greyed options come to life.

Is your document protected in some way? Like forms protection?
