"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. (Cont'd.)....

...You may not have the application permissions to access the item."

    Single PC, XP SP3

Not all applications are affected, just some and, in some instances, I cannot even download software.

Having searched the whole of Google - it seems! - without success it occurred to me to come here for help.

Apparently this is not a recent phenomenon and has affected a lot of people, but Microsoft don't appear to
    have the answer/s.

Is it possible a recent patch may have caused it?

Probably like a lot of others I feel between the devil and the deep blue sea when it comes to allowing MS to
automatically download/install patches, and advice re inappropriate ones comes after the event.

I've tried the various suggestions offered - "unblocking" folders, changing security settings within IE - Ihave v8 -
though how that may affect other than internet workings I'm not sure.

Does anyone have experience and solutions of this critical situation please?

I have System Restore, but it wouldn't go back to any selected dates.
