Editing a template in Word 2010

I have a template in Word that has fields with prompting. I want to change some of the prompts, but when I open the template, it starts prompting for input to the fields. If I just escape out without input, it erase the field name. I don't want to save it and ruin what I have so far.

How do I do this -- edit the field labels and inputs without "running" the template?

I am making some assumptions here. The first is that you actually are talking about a word template rather than a model document. If so, you would use it by creating a new document based on the template. This may be done by double-clicking on its icon in Windows.

If this is the case, find the icon and right-click on it to open it rather than create a new document.
