Anyone know of a good portable (runs from a usb drive) app that can read a disk's SMART data?

2011-07-07 13:58The manufacture of your specific HDD may have a bootable tool that includes the SMART data in it's presentation.

2011-07-07 14:09True, but I don't want/don't need a bootable tool since I already have one (Ubuntu's Disk Utility). Plus booting from a CD drive is slow as molasses. I want a program that I can plug in my flash drive, run the program, and see the condition of the HD. I'm currently using speedfan, but there's no portable version, so you have to install it every time. I need a portable program as I have a whole pile of computers that my boss wants me to check.

2011-07-08 17:51Do not rely on S.M.A.R.T! I have had several drives fail and SMART reported that each one was fine. It took a full sector scan (using the manufacturer's utility) to recognize an issue, and even after that scan noted a hardware issue SMART still passed.
Amazingly enough, Ubuntu complained about hardware issues on one of the drives, so it think it used a slightly different mechanism to detect disk errors.
