Question How to Shrink MFT without reformatting?

    Howdy folks -

I had a beta program run amok and create a many million empty directory entries. They're all gone, but my MFT is now taking up over 1/3rd of my boot SSD.

So, how can I get the MFT back where it should be without reformatting the drive?

I'd like to do this without doing the usual: back up, format, reinstall tango.

I'm talking about the actual MFT, not the reserve zone. Yes, I know that there are the "marked deleted" but not actually deleted entries that need to be purged.

Is there some utility around (Preferably free) that will let me do this????

Please let me know if you know of any ways to do this. I searched the lounge and didn't get any hits. Also, the usual Raxco and Priform utilities don't do it (unless there's some hidden function I've not found). Microsoft Technet is no help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please don't just post some answer like it can't be done! If that's your opinion don't bother posting!

    Woody, you out there??????

    Regards,
    Bill

p.s. I am a retired alpha geek and know of what I post.

Supposedly Paragon Total Defrag will shrink the MFT. You could check the trial version. It does not say what, if any, limitations there are in the trial version.

    Thanks Joe!

Paragon did the trick! Shrank the MFT down from 19 Gig to 413 Meg.

The free version worked like a champ!

    Hooray!
    Cheers,
    Bill
