Question Word - Curious password problem?

Does anyone know if there is a maximum length of password one can use in Word 2002 (for opening documents)?

I have a strange problem... I have an eight character password that I often use (6 letters and 2 numbers). For one particular document I thought I would use it twice to (slightly) improve the security, so entered the password twice in succession ie 16 characters, and then confirmed using the same 16 characters. Word saved the document without a peep.

When I now try to open the document, I keep getting 'the password is incorrect' message, even though I know I have entered the 16 characters correctly.

Because I didn't believe it at first, I tried creating and saving another document with the same double password and exactly the same thing has happened again...?

Can anyone please throw any light on why this might be happening and, secondly, any suggestions as to how to reopen the document?!

    Thanks,

    V

To get this document you might try putting the original PW (the 8 character PW) in and adding characters one at a time until it opens. This will tell you what the PW is and probably what the max number is.

You star! Your method worked and it turns out the answer is 15 characters! Shame Word doesn't warn you if you go over this limit.

    Thanks again.

Glad this helped. Sometimes the simplest methods are the most difficult to see. This happens to me all the time.
