Question Folder "thinks" it's a photo folder, Explorer crashes

I download all files to a folder called Downloads, on data partition D:. Somehow, Vista now "thinks" that this folder is a "photos" folder, and displays everything as a thumbnail. (There are plenty of image files in the folder, but plenty of other things too). If I change the view to "details" (my view of choice), the columns include not "date modified" but "date taken". Then, shortly after changing the view to "details", Explorer crashes. Hmmm. I am frankly stumped. Any ideas?

Did you make any changes or apply any updates just prior to this problem occuring? Have you attempted a system restore to a time before the problem occured? Do you have a system Image from before the problem occured? I would think that somehow something became corrupted. Did you start using any new image viewer or photo viewer app that could have made this change?

Thanks Ted for your reply. You ask all the right questions. I recently made Faststone image viewer the default image viewer; I used it plenty before, but it was not default. I just tried renaming the folder: it then displays correctly. Rename it back to "Downloads", and again it's a photo folder.

Just discovered this. Well, right click at "Date Taken", deselect "Date Taken", select "Date Modified", and voila, everything is ok again. Thanks for your help; problem solved.

You can change the folder type by right clicking on the folder, select properties, and then customize.
