    Question Question about the QUOTE field

    I don't understand the purpose of the quote field. You put what you want to show in your document in a QUOTE field. Why put it in a field instead of simply putting the text in?

    The example in the reference at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...in=HA102110133 is as follows:

    { QUOTE { IF { DATE \@ "M" } = 1 "12" "{= { DATE \@ "M" } -1 }/1/03" \@ "MMMM"} }

    However, the same result appears in the document simply using the IF field without the QUOTE field.

    { IF { DATE \@ "M" } = 1 "12" "{= { DATE \@ "M" } -1 }/1/03" \@ "MMMM"}

    I've used it for years when told to do so by people I trust, but I'm not sure why.

    Now I don't feel so bad never learning this field.

    I find the QUOTE field useful for ensuring that all members of a group of fields (such as those used in my date calculation and field math tutorials) get updated when any field in the group is updated. You can some rather odd results if only some fields in a dependency arrangement get updated. QUOTE fields are also useful for expressing ASCII values as text:
    {QUOTE 67 104 97 114 108 101 115 32 75 101 110 121 111 110}
    and, when used with the \* Arabic switch, stripping text from alpha-numeric strings:
    {QUOTE "Hello 999 World" \* Arabic}

    I'm sure there are other uses too - I just can't think of others ATM.
