External HDD shows in Device Manager but not in Drive Management

    Hi Guys,

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium and my external Samsung HDD which I use for backups has suddenly not shown up in Drive Management although it shows in Device Manager ! It also doesn't show in Windows Explorer.

I first noticed this when my backup program 'Genie Timeline Pro' stated that my backup drive was not accessible, so I'm not able to do any backups at the moment.

When I plug the drive into another computer it shows correctly and I can access the drive via Explorer so the drive is OK.

I've searched the web for a solution but haven't, as yet, found anything. I also did a search of the Forum but again failed to find a solution - my apologies if this has been covered previously.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Graham

Have you tried to unplug the Ext drive, reboot the PC, then plug it back in?

Hello astrostar69, and welcome to the Lounge!

Check out this thread in the General Windows Forum. There is an interesting link in one of the posts that you might find of benefit.

    Graham,
Hello.... When you look in "Disk Management" ..make sure that you "scroll down" far enough to see all the "external removable" positions available. It may be there, it's just doesn't have a "drive letter" assigned ... If this be the case ...Assign one , and it will reappear in explorer... I have no idea why this sometimes happens (loss of a drive letter) but it does happen on occasions ... Regards Fred

    Hi Guys,

Many thanks for all your input. Having disconnected and then reconnected the HDD, it finally appeared in the Disk Management window but without a drive letter - don't ask how the drive letter disappeared as I have no idea !!
Anyway, I reallocated the original drive letter and the drive can now be seen by my backup software, so all is now running smoothly (until next time )

Thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated.

Graham, Glad your problem is solved. By the way, welcome to the Lounge. I was remiss in not offering a welcome in my last post.

    Hi Ted,

No problems, it's just so nice to be able to find help when things go wrong. I shall no doubt visit the Lounge on a regular basis to see if I can return the help to others, although I'm no expert.

    Kind Regards,

    Graham
