Styles automatically renaming themselves (Word XP)

I have been experiencing an odd behavior of styles automatically renaming themselves at random times while I edit a document using Word XP. I use two primary styles in the document: Body Text and Body Text Indent. Body Text is simply normal, left justified paragraphs, while Body Text Indent is based on Body Text, but has a 0.5" first line indent. Neither of the styles has the "Automatically Update" option checked.

While editing the document (adding new text, rearranging, and applying styles) the two styles sometimes automatically rename themselves, appending the name of the style and the word "Char". I have not figured out the pattern yet, but wanted to ask if others have seen this.

A specific example is that the Body Text style will rename itself to "Body Text,Body Text Char" while the Body Text Indent style renames itself to "Body Text Indent,Body Text Indent Char". One time I failed to notice the renaming of the styles, and it happened multiple times, ultimately resulting in a style named "Body Text Indent,Body Text Indent Char,Char,Char" Interestingly, the references for the "Style Based On" and "Style For Following Paragraph" options in the styles are automatically updated to reflect the new names.

It is a simple operation to rename the styles back, but annoying nonetheless.

Hi alchemistmatt. I don't have XP, but have experienced something similar in 97 and 2000. Your description of the renamed styles jolted my memory...my issue was related to the Tools|AutoCorrectAutoFormat As Your Type window. In the "automatically as you type" area, there are options for "define styles based on your formatting." Is that checked? If it is, clear it...

You hit it on the nose. Yes, "Define Styles based on Your Formatting" was checked. AutoCorrect and AutoFormat are useful most of the time, but a few of the options can be annoying.

No problem...glad I could help. And, yet, I'm disappointed to hear that all of this stuff is STILL turned on by default, even in XP...*sigh*

Interestingly enough, I've had this happen even when this particular option is turned OFF (I triple checked). As was earlier stated, it's easily fixed... has anyone else had this happen?

It's me again -- the original poster. I take back what I said ealier. As Adrianna observed, I am seeing the styles in my document continue to automatically rename themselves even with the "Define Styles Based on your Formatting" option turned off. <img src=/S/mad.gif border=0 alt=mad width=15 height=15>

I haven't used Word XP yet, but I saw a demonstration of it a few months ago and I think this behavior is actually a new "feature" of the program. I was horrified when I saw it. Here are my notes from this part of the demo "If you apply direct formatting to a style, it will create a new style based on the original style plus the direct formatting. If you add the direct formatting to the style, it will get rid of your created style...Note: New styles are created when direct formatting is applied to text formatted with a style. It shows the base style plus the direct formatting. If you directly format text in the same base style in the same way, it will apply the same created style." As I said, I was horrified.

The behavior you are describing is, in fact, a new "feature" of Word, and it is annoying, but I do not think it is causing the styles to rename themselves.

The attached Word Document (Word 97/2000 format) contains two screen captures of a small portion of my document and the styles being used. The first image shows what the styles are supposed to be named. The second image shows what Word has renamed them to after editing for a while.

The "feature" that Lee describes can bee seen by the style Body Text Indent + 9pt. I changed the size of one of my paragraphs to 9 pt and Word created the new style for me. Yes, I could create a specific 9 pt Body Text Indent style, but it's not worth the trouble. Anyway, I can live with the "feature". It's the renaming that is really annoying.

On Tools/Options/Edit tab there is a "keep track of formatting" checkbox. When checked it does indeed keep track of all formatting. I found it annoying and it was really cluttering up my styles list. I could probably find a use for it, but not in my everyday work so I unchecked it.
