Can a cleared History be restored (IE 6)

Apparently one of my children decided to clear the History on Explorer. Is there any way to restore it ?

    Thanks for any help.

Well, No. But, if your goal is determining where they've been, you've got at least one option i'm aware of.

You have 5 copies of a file called index.dat on your machine. These files contain indexes of all cookies which have been stored on your machine. The one you're looking for is in C:WindowsTemporary Internet Files

Using notepad, open this file. You'll see a whole lot of gibberish, but it's broken out into sections. Each section is preceded with a tilda, followed by a capital U, then the username. (hopefully you've setup user accounts on your machine, otherwise it will be impossible to tell when the access occured.) There is more gibberish below this, but if you read through this, you should be able to identify a URL in each section. This is the address of a page previously visited.

These addresses will not be there unless someone using your computer has visited that specific site.

You can also use this method to recover history items you may have lost, it's not very effective, but it works.

    Hope this helps!

I would have to agree with DrkRealm on this. However, looking through the index.dat in the Temporary Internet Files folder can be quite time comsuming.

You *may* want to find the index.dat file in your History folder. This is NOT as simple as it sounds... Even if you do a "Find... Files or Folders" it may not show up -- it is 'extremely hidden'. The only way I have found to get to it is through DOS. If you have any DOS experience, then open a DOS box and drill down to your History folder and type "edit index.dat". This opens the Historyindex.dat file in the DOS editor. I believe you can then find most of the sites in your old History folder right there.

There is one problem with both of these approaches -- they do give you the list of sites you've been to, but it does NOT restore your History folder to it's previous function. Unless you have a full system backup, I am not sure anything can do that..... Good luck.

Re: Can a cleared History be restored (IE 6)

Ooops! I really should have looked first also.<img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> In actuality, ever since IE5 came out, the index.dat for the History folder is really kept in the "History.IE5" sub-folder. For a "usual" set up, it would be here:

    C:WINDOWSHistoryHistory.IE5

    So in DOS, type this:

    cd
    cd WindowsHistoryHistory.IE5
    edit index.dat

And that should get almost anyone with IE5 or IE6 into the index.dat file for the History folder. Again, this cannot "restore" the folder, but at least it will give you the URL's. It's better than nothing.

Re: Can a cleared History be restored (IE 6)

    To DrkRealm and rmrucker :

Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately none of them worked. I even tried using OnTrack EZ Recovery Pro. All that could do was to restore the .dat files in 12 of the 109 directories under the main History directory. Not quite what I needed.
I've learned my lesson. From now on I do backups !!!

Thanks again ( also to those who just read & thought about it !!! )

    Don
