Upgrade from XP to 7 on new HD

The machine is about 5 years old and has XP installed. The HD is quite noisy especially when booting. What is the easiest way to install a new hard drive and use one of my three pack of Windows 7 upgrade? I have run the MS upgrade advisor and the machine is Win 7 compatible. I am confused on how the install process will find the XP installation to verify. Thanks!

Use this web site from Windows Seven Forums and use option 4. This allows a clean install on a new HD without having to prove you have a valid XP install. There are many other sites that show the same info. Basically you will be installing twice, but since Win 7 installs rather quickly, you will not find this cumbersome.

MS has actually built in this possibility into Windows since Vista. It is a well documented installation technique, especially nice when replacing a HD during the upgrade.

Once you have the system installed and customized, and all apps installed, look into Imaging for backing up your entire system. You can read many threads in the Security and Backup forum.

    paul,
Hello... If it were me, i would make a "Image" of your Dying HD as soon as possible.. and store it some place off your failing HD. If you don't have a program ..there is a free one from Macrium Reflect Macrium Free Once saved change out your old HD and replace with the new ... boot from the recovery CD that you have made from Macrium Reflect, and "Recover your Image (of XP)" to the new HD.. Then you can do the "Upgrade" to "7".. You may have to contact "MS" and explain about the HD change ...This way you still have the XP image in case you decide that you want to do the dual boot thing. Regards Fred
