IE9 e-mail commands grayed out

I am using Windows 7 with full-functioning IE9 and am totally baffled as to why IE’s ‘send page by email’ &‘send link by email’ options are greyed out and how to make these two commands active.
Would anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have a locally installed email client such as Outlook or Windows Live Mail?

To use the Send Page/Link by e-mail… functions:
Use the File menu:
· Press Alt + Fon your keyboard
· Click Send
· Choose the applicable option

Or

Enable the Command bar:
· Press Alt + Von your keyboard
· Click Toolbars
· Click Command bar
Then to Send Page/Link by e-mail:
· Click Page
· Click applicable option

Yes Brownie I do have Windows Live Mail set as my default emailing component - is Windows Live Mail the culprit?
If so, can you suggest a alternative to Windows Live Mail which is compatible with Win 7 and which will also give me access to both of these IE9 commands?

That's good, I firstly wanted to establish if you had a local client or were relying on web based email.

I seriously doubt that Windows Live Mail would be the culprit as that is Windows 7 compatible but let's just check that it is fully registered as the default client within Windows 7.

The concept in Ted's link would have been my next idea but that seems more Vista based so I will detail the Windows 7 differences here.

Click the start orb and type 'default' sans quotes, then click 'Default Programs' when it appears.

Now click 'Set your default programs'

Find Windows Live Mail in the list on the left hand side, click that and then click on 'Set this program as default'

Hopefully that should fix your problem.

I've attached a screenshot of how it looks on my PC which uses Outlook to give you an idea.

This concept sounds like a sure-fire fix (and thanks for the extra-helpful thumbnail).

On a different issue, I wasn't aware that pictures could be included in forums; for future reference could you please describe in detail the process for attaching screendumps/pictures?
Please bear in mind, I do have a learning disability.

If you have a pic, any pic simple Go Advanced (next to Quick Reply). Either click the Paperclip in the top Icon list or choose Manage Attachments below the Reply box and follow the instructions.

Be sure to set your upload settings as follows for the best upload experience (Settings, General Settings, Misc field):

As you can see your first suggestion only opens the drop-down File menu, but sadly top two sub-commands are still greyed out.

When you mention 'this page', am I right that you're refering to your 'ALT+F' & 'ALT+V' suggestions which you suggested in your 2011-08-08 19:08 response?

When I mention this page, it is part of a linked article. Just click on the link to go to this page and try the solution they mention there.

I actually offered 2 separate possibilities. The Alt+F and the Alt+V was one possibility. The linked page was a second possibility.

Hi again Ted - sorry to continuously be a nuisance - I have also tried out Brownie's suggestion yesterday; in his attached screendump he apparently uses Microsoft Outlook. I use a alternative for email access (Windows Live Mail), when I brought up this screen at home I found it rather odd to have 2 almost similar entries, which are: Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Mail (news). I don't know whether one of these entries is confusing the system and/or which one is used for email.

The Windows Live Mail (news) is the part of WLM that you can use to access newsgroups. It has nothing to do with the mail piece of WLM.
