    Desktop icons missing

Long time reader, first time posting. I've tinkered with w/95, 98, XP, Vista home prem, now W/7 and just opened new hp for family member. I lost the game icons and the internet connections icon on the desktop. Wondering if there is something I'm missing when putting them on the desk-top. I went to control panel and set up the network which works fine and put a "connect" icon on desktop. Later w/restart it was gone. Also went to start programs, games, right click game & send to desktop etc. now they are gone when started up after the evening shutdown.
Thanks in advance for your patience

flatlander, Welcome to the Lounge as a new poster.

Right Click on the desktop and choose Personalize. Upper left corner, click Change desktop icons. You can choose to add the Network icon from here.

Start Orb, All Programs, click on the browser icon and copy a shortcut to the desktop (right click copy, go to desktop right click paste) You can also Pin the icons to the Start Orb and/or Taskbar. Simply right click the icon and choose Pin to Start Menu or Pin to Taskbar. This does not place them on the desktop, but just as good on the Start Menu or Taskbar. Try it out.

I moved this thread to the Windows 7 forum. In addition to Ted, this is where others familiar with Windows 7 are more likely to see the thread.

Some HP computers install Fences by default which will hide all desktop shortcuts until you double click anywhere on the desktop. Double on a blank area of the desktop to hide them again. I don't have an HP but I use this app to keep a nice clean desktop but still have access to my shortcuts when needed.

    Disappearing icons

Thanks Ted & Jerry for the response, I'm 100 miles away from the pc but will apply these methods asap & keep you informed.

I'm thinking I need to learn more about remote access and mend it from my pc but have to look into that yet.

    Thanks for being there.

    Remote Freebie

Take a look at TeamViewer http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx for an easy way to set up remote control of your home computer while you are away.
