    About a known issue for 979688 (MS10-083)

I just installed Vista SP2 on 7/3/11….Listed now through Windows ‘auto update’*** is 979688 (MS10-083)….
A ‘known issue’ for 979688 (MS10-083) under…….Article ID: 2405882 - Last Review: June 11, 2011 - Revision: 3.2……..says----“ Systems that have Windows Search 4.0 (update 940157 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940157) ) installed on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 must install the following update instead of the update that is provided in the security bulletin MS10-083.”

It goes on to say----“ Systems that have automatic update turned on or that use detection and deployment tools such as Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server will be offered the update automatically.”

I do have Windows Search 4.0……I’m confused….Can I allow the update as offered through ‘auto update’…..???--- or---do I have to manually D/L and install the one listed “For Windows Vista SP2 with Windows Search 4.0 installed” through Article ID 2405882….???

***I do have auto updates turned ON; but don’t allow either D/L or install until I have researched and get clearance from Woody (and Susan)……

    Hi VWDRV1,

If you are certain that neither update has yet been applied (check your update history) to your Vista SP2, just hide update 979688 and download and apply the recommended update for users of Windows Search 4.0.

If it says it is for SP2 then I'd go ahead and install it. From KB2405882:

"Systems that have Windows Search 4.0 (update 940157
    (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940157) )
installed on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 must install the following
update instead of the update that is provided in the security bulletin MS10-083.
This is because, by default, update 940157 for Windows Search 4.0 installs a
higher binary version than the binaries that are on the system. The updates that
are offered by security bulletin MS10-083 will not overwrite the binary versions
that are installed by update 940157."

The KB979688 download is at revision 3 now. So, if you installed the original version it likely would not have overwritten the files it needed to. The latest release most likely just changed the dates on the files.
