Sum figures based upon text in bordering column (2002)

I have a spreadsheet with budget figures in d4:d25. In e4:e25 is a ranking for the budget items (critical, important, reasonable)
I would like to sum d for each of the rankings in e. Any thoughts on how to best go about this?
    Thanks. scott

Are you looking at a formula or a VBA or an Excel solution, all are available for this one, but my favourite would be to use the SubTotal under the data menu. It does the job quickly and perfectly, I hope...

    Try:

=SUMIF(E4:E25,"critical",D425)

Just change the "crirical" to "important" and "reasonable" for the other two.
