Too many items in Explorer navigation pane

My computer (running Windows 7 Pro SP1) started out with Windows Explorer showing the items listed below in the navigation pane.

    Favorites
    Desktop
    Downloads
    Recent Places

    Libraries
    Documents
    Music
    Pictures
    Videos

    Homegroup
    User name
    Laptop

    Computer
    Local Disc (C:\)

    Network
    Name-PC
    Printer
    Laptop
    Name-PC

Now all of a sudden I have all kinds of other stuff there - all the icons on my desktop at the bottom of the list, my user name between Homegroup and Computer, another Desktop icon above Libraries. Also, all the spaces are gone between the headings. How can I get this back to the way it was? I tried deleting the extra desktop icon, but nothing happened. I have no idea how this happened, but I hate it. I really liked the nice clean look before.

Is there a way to get rid of all this extra junk?

Thanks RetiredGeek!! Do you know how many times I looked at that and didn't see it? Boy, do I feel siily. Glad it was such a simple fix. I WILL remember that one.

    Thanks again!

    Lorraine,

Glad to be of assistance. Often it just takes another pair of eyes to see things differently. I don't want to tell you how many times I couldn't solve a programming problem and when I finally asked another programmer to look at it they saw the problem immediately. Of course then I felt like such a ... well you know what I mean.
