    Unlocker

Fred's column correctly recommended 'Unlocker' as a valuable tool for users. I have two small points to raise.

I already have version 1.9.1 installed and several times it has saved my bacon - but when initially installed it also brought with it, unannounced - the Bling tool bar and the Windows ID utility. Can anyone confirm whether the latest offering still comes with such undesired goodies?

Secondly, when downloading the installation program from the cnet site given by Fred the file is named 'cnet_Unlocker1_9_1_1_exe.exe', which is slightly worrying. Its size is 444 KB, compared with 784 KB for my current setup file, ostensibly the same 1.9.1 version.

Possibly it has omitted the toolbars? You wouldn't know until you tried it...

I am pretty certain there are one or two Unlocker tick boxes which you can untick if you don't want to install Unwanted Stuff.

You have to watch these installers like a hawk!

How to get proper version of Unlocker: and, an alternative

Note that the Download.com link in Fred's article appears to be only for a version of Unlocker that is 32-bit and will not work with 64-bit Windows according to the User Reviews (the Download.com description does not mention 32-bit or 64-bit).

However, as of August 14, 2011, the Unlocker web site is back on-line at:
    http://www.emptyloop.com/unlocker/

Also note that there is a separate version for Windows 32-bit, 64-bit, and a version that works on both 32-bit and 64-bit.

To download the version you want for free (with no donation), click on the version you want at the bottom of the web page under the heading "Download for Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista / Windows 7 - Unlocker is Freeware"

Because Unlocker was not available for a very long time in a version that worked on Windows 7 64-bit and I couldn't wait, I use another freeware unlocker program called LockHunter.

Although the LockHunter site says it is in beta and no Latest News has been posted for a while, I've used it occasionally for over a year now on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and it has worked fine for me.

LockHunter is not included on the "Similar programs and why Unlocker is better" comparison section of the Unlocker web site.

The LockHunter web site page is:
    http://www.lockhunter.com

The earlier web article that led me to LockHunter and a brief review of it is at:

    Lightbulb Unlocker/LockHunter !?

Hi all : Because of the latest potential "problems" with Unlocker, I recently have recommended LockHunter, which I first heard about on the Wilders Security Forums .

First, if the download file starts with "cnet_" then you are getting the latest bloatware from them: a proprietary installer from Download.com. See this article for more info: http://www.extremetech.com/computing...ut-motivations

And yes, the developer of Unlocker has instituted crpaware built in to his installer, namely the Bing Toolbarplus a few other nasties. Better yet, if you decide you do not want to install the crapware you are penalized with a delay counter that stops your download from starting. Here's a pic of the installer with the countdown timer activated:

    Thanks!
