Windows XP Media Center on HP Pavilion 1600

I got this computer from my daughter after they had bought a new one and removed all thier information. I ran the Recovery (Drive D on this computer) and did a reinstall, registration and all that was required. This had a package on it that included Norton that I did not want so I removed it from the system.

Windows SP 3 is installed.

I have .NET Framework intalled but now I cannot get 2.0. I get error 25015 Failed to install assembly "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET Framework\v2.0 50727\Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility.dll because of system error 0x8031107.


Security essentials is installed and working.

Any help to solve would be appreciated.

1. If you have any VS 2005 beta components on your machine, uninstall them and try to install again.
2. Turn off any virus scanners you have and try to install again.
3. Try stoping IIS and then try the install.

I've seen a couple of threads that say to use Windows Explorer and rename (or delete) the V2.0.50727 folder and then retry the install.

One of the problems with the reinstall is all the clutter that comes with it. I feel it would have been better if I had an OEM disk that you could run that just installed or repaired Windows. I have an OEM disk for Windows XP Pro but the computer does not recognize it as a proper disk.

I meant the .NET framework 2.0 reinstall. See .NET 2.0 x86, & .NET framework 2.0 SP2.

Note: Be sure to get the X86 version of SP2.

I did try that and it installs to the end but the has to close and rolls back the install. Windows Live does the same thing.

Did you rename or delete the folder and then try the install?

I did finally get to the file and renamed it with a -old on the end of the name. >net Framework is now install with all updates and I thank you for your direction.
