    PATCH WATCH

Moving more DigiNotar certs to 'untrusted'

    By Susan Bradley

The DigiNotar root-certificate debacle was big news and struck at the foundations of our Internet security.

The fallout affects everyone from Windows PCs to Mac systems, with updates all around.

The full text of this column is posted at Windowssecrets.com/patch-watch/Moving-more-DigiNotar-certs-to-untrusted/ (opens in a new window/tab).

Columnists typically cannot reply to comments here, but do incorporate the best tips into future columns.

Susan's columns are always excellent and one of the first things I read in this newsletter. "Regularly updated problem-patch chart" is great. This one feature alone makes getting the paid version worthwhile.

    Net frameworks

It has been quite awhile for the "skip" on all Net framework updates. When if ever
will any of these become available for "install" for an individual user? They keep
showing up on Secunia as being missing and needed for 100% secure.

    What about other current KB's?

I have both 2468871 and 2539636 in my list of updates this month, your patch table doesn't mention them. 2 questions, why are they not in the list, and what would their status be if they were in the list?

Hmmm..... my secunia does not take note of them. Wonder why?

    Can't Hibernate since latest patches

Since applying the last batch of updates I have been unable to Hibernate. As soon as Hibernation appears to have been completed, the computer starts itself up again. I haven't had time yet to troubleshoot by removing the patches one by one, but interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this.

    FYI:

Since installing KB2583935, an Update for Outlook Social Connector 2010, 32-Bit, every time I start outlook 2010 I receive a message that Office has detected a potential security concern with SOCIALCONNECTOR.DLL, and indicating that the add-in has been disabled. I would be interested in comment on whether I should trust the document/certificate, or whether there is some actual concern.

I'm using Win7 Pro on a Dell Inspiron. I'm seeing new updates for MS Visual C++, KB 2467173 and KB2538243. I haven't seen those mentioned. So is it safe to assme they're okay? I want to do all updates before installing SP1. Thanks in advance for your help.
