Does a repair install reformat the hard drive? I've looked at the screenshots and it appears so.

No, you start the install from your running version of W7 and it basically replaces itself non-destructively. A format would be destructive as far as retaining settings and data.
I think I have one system that does the same thing, or it corrected itself (I lose track because I have too many), but in any case if you don't need I.E. specifically, Chrome, Firefox, Opera...there are many alternatives.

Okay, I've run a repair install and it worked admirably. Thank you!

    Cool

    Grasshopper, Welcome,

    Share water with us,

The article you seek (begin at the beginning) is:

    http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/operatingsystems/189400897

I'm sure you'll be able to find updated references to this topic on this forum or elsewhere, to include Vista & 7. It's a very useful move in semi-extreme circumstances. Enjoy . I've only done it once, but it sure gets the kinks out.

If you're using SP1 be sure to read the postings on that topic; it's easier to download & burn an SP1 .iso than to slipstream SP1 onto an existing Win7 disc.
