Getting "Internet Explorer has Stopped Working" repeatedly

I get this message repeatedly. It started about 2 weeks ago. It appears to occur most often when I try to close a IE tab or close IE completely, though I recall at least once it occurred when I simply clicked on a IE tab.

I have run a complete virus scan and it turned up nothing.

I noticed that Windows Auto update ran a few days ago, two days in a row during shut-down. Don't know what the updates were.

    I haven't installed Windows SP1 yet.

    Specs
    Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit
    IE 8 - 8.0.7600.16385

I did a lounge search and didn't find any references to this message. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Unusual errors in IE are often caused by addons. Have you tried running IE with addons disabled? Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet Explorer (no add-ons).

No, I haven't. I can give that a try but since the error is intermittant, it could take some time to determine if that is the problem.

While I am doing that, is there a way to see a complete list of add-ons I have for IE? If so, please give instructions.

Yes, there is a way. Go to Tools (the little gear at the right end of the address bar) | Manage add-ons.

After looking at the complete list of IE addons I chose to disable one rather than disabling all of them. I chose to disable Google addons. Its been only two days and so a little early to declare victory but so far, the message has not returned. So it look like that may have been the problem. Thanks for the help Joe.

    Hi,

I was having this problem as well. The solution I found that works for me was disabling the proxy in IE. I'm not sure how it was enabled in the first place, but oh well.
Goto (IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings)
And uncheck your proxy. (uncheck Use a proxy server for you LAN)

if you are still have problem with your Intenet Explorer, Download Windows Explorer Repair Tool and install it. play this tool to fix any or all problems with your Internet Explorer. You may receive the Internet Explorer error message due to many reasons. Some of the reasons explained here:

Visit the above link and follow the procedure to fix your Internet Explorer.
    I hope this helps.

Craig, if you had proxy server enabled without doing it yourself, I would download and run Malwarebytes to be sure you haven't picked up some Malware. This is one of the tricks they employ.
