    Word 2010 Fill-in fields

We have converted several templates from Word 2003 to 2010. The templates (forms) with Fill-in fields do not pop up with their prompts. Are we missing a step or is there something needed to get the prompts to work (protect the template?)?

Do not protect the document! That is for a different kind of form field.

See the Ask Fields tutorial at: Downloads (Also includes fill-in fields.)

Are your forms Word templates or simply documents? A template is a special kind of document. A form can be a template or a document.

Are you creating a new document based on the template? Or opening the template? These are different things. Templates tutorial

Opening a document or template with a Fill-In field does not trigger your prompt. Creating a new document based on the template does.

In Word 2003 the forms with Fill-in fields were saved as templates. When we converted to 2010, we saved the forms as documents, which happen to be saved in the templates folders. We want them to work like templates, create documents from the form.

Why not resave them as .dotx templates?

We had hoped to cut down the number of templates that we have (250), but it looks like Fill-in only work in templates. That will mean another 15 templates added to our list.

Thanks for the help and the information in the links.

You can use Fill-In fields in documents, but it requires a macro to trigger them. Look at the tutorial I listed before.

Why do you want to limit the number of templates? What is the goal here? What is the problem caused by multiple templates?

Using legacy form fields in a protected form may give you a result closer to what you are looking for. For a look at all of your options take a look at Chapter 44 of Microsoft Word 2010 Bible by Herb Tyson.
