    14808 updates

OK, I'm used to seeing "Installing updates, don't shut down" messages when I turn off my system for the night, and I'm used to seeing "Installing 4 updates" type of messages when I start up in the morning. But what about the 14808 updates that Windows 7 installed on my system this time? Now Secunia is squawking that eleven programs need updating and I see another half day of fussing over this. I don't see how they can do that many updates without breaking something else. Do I smell another service pack coming? Or maybe they are getting ready to push Windows 8 out the door and think that annoying the heck out of us will somehow make us all excited about their products so we'll want to buy more?

There were 8 updates for each of my machines (7 x64 and 7 x86) and everything went smooth. If you have 11 programs needing updating, I would think most would be 3rd party.

14808, must be a mistake. I might go to WU and click Check for Updates to see what comes up. I'm with Rui, I had a total of 8 updates, not 14808!!!

Well I didn't even read properly, Ted. 14808 updates!! Something is seriously wrong.

Backspacer, did you try to check for updates again?

I just checked the update history. It shows nine updates were done to my system yesterday and only one optional one (a keyboard update) available. Pretty weird. I suppose it was just a glitch in the counter or something.

    Cumulative Updates

When I booted my laptop tonight I was greeted with the message Applying update #14808 of 14808. I found this forum by Googling that update. Seems like a lot of updates. Maybe update #1 was to Windows 1.0.

AHA! See? I wasn't crazy after all. (Well, maybe I am crazy, but not in regards to the 14808 update message.)

Oh, I just got the cumulative updates thing. :-) Maybe we received updates 14800 through 14808, but Windows Update improperly initialized the variable. Or maybe Microsoft has just decided it's easier to keep track of them this way. I guess it will be interesting to see what it says the next time.
