Search won't work in Windows Explorer (Win XP)

My father-in-law is running Windows XP and recently ran into an issue with Windows Explorer. Whenever he tries to search, the left pane of the Explorer window goes totally blank. If you push the search button a second time, the blank left panel disappears (back to a single panel), but there is no way to search. This happens whether he initiates a search directly from Windows Explorer, or from the Start menu. To get around this, he tried installing Xplorer2 Lite. That reverts to Windows Xplorer so does not work, but apparently the paid version (he is as a trial right now) does work. Ideally he'd like to find what is causing the issue so he doesn't have to buy the paid version of Xplorer2. Any help is much appreciatied!

    1. I would recommend downloading Everything Search. Much faster and easier to use than Windows search.
If you want to stick with Windows search:
    2. Download and run Malware Bytes to insure you haven't picked up any Malware.
    3. If you have a restore point prior to experiencing the issue, perform a Sytem Restore.
    4. If that doesn't work, try a non destructive repair install .

Thanks for the great suggestions, Jerry. Not sure if we can track down the install CD, but one of these suggestions should help move us forward.
