    Newsgroups made manageable?

Does anyone know of s/w that helps manage newsgroups? I've tried Outlook Express and that's too convoluted (for me, at least); I just set myself up in Netscape (v6.1) and there doesn't seem to be any kind of keyword search; you either have to browse through 61,000 newsgroups for the ones you want, or already know their complete names. I thought I had seen a few such programs on the old software link from the main page, but that is gone now. Any suggestions?

    Hi
When you want to search for keywords, is that in the Header or in the body of the messages?
If the header, then in OE it couldn't be simpler. Click Newsgroups and enter your keyword in the address box. e.g bikes brings up all the grouops with 'bikes' in the title.

In OE I don't have a problem doing that - it's other things, such as clicking the 'Headers' button 50 times to download all the headers that are outstanding, instead of a way to bring them in all at once. Or blocking messages I definitely don't want, so it is easier to find the ones I'm looking for. Fine-tuning, I guess you could call it. There may very well be a way to do it in OE, but whenever I look for it I draw a blank.

It's Netscape that doesn't seem to provide a keyword search.

Does anyone have any opinions on NewsPro as a newsgroup manager?

    Thanks!

OE does have a setting that will allow all headers to be pulled down at once. In the "News" section under Tools | Options | Read, you can de-select the checkbox for "Get #xxx# headers at a time" in order to have all available headers retrieved at once; or you can set the number to be higher than the default (which I believe is 300). This should make the program a little more user-friendly.

As to filtering out messages you don't want, the Tools | Message Rules | News... option will let you set some very specific rules to block or otherwise filter messages. One rule that I used was to check the subject line for [OT] or similar verbage, marking these messages as read... and setting the message filter to display only unread headers.

Hope this helps. I consider OE to be one of the few Microsoft products that they've gotten right.

I love OE. I used to be a rabid Eudora supporter but OE left it standing, long ago.
