    Annoying format box

My workplace recently upgraded to Office 2010; my question is regarding MS Word.

Whenever highlighting any word, a faint image of the formatting bar appears above the selected text, and slowly materialises as the mouse pointer is drawn closer to this bar. As the ribbon already contains the formatting options, I would like to permanently disable the formatting bar which appears above the selected text. Is this able to be done, if so how?
    Thanks in advance!

That's the mini toolbar. To get rid of it: in Word Options > General, clear the check box before Show mini toolbar on selection. If you decide that you want to keep it, you can turn off any instance of it by pressing Esc.

Keep in mind that you are not always on the Home tab when you are editing. In those instances, this minitoolbar can be very useful.
