Word 2010 won't print color... why?

The printer is a LaserJet 2550. The computer is running Windows 7 SP1 and Office 2010. Windows describes the printer driver as "HP Universal Printing PCL 6."

Word 2010 prints everything in monochrome. So does Excel.

Outlook prints color. So do non-Office applications.

One of my office mates also uses Office 2010, and shares this problem. Another, who uses Office 2007, does not.

Does anyone know what causes this, and how to fix it?

Later: my first office mate showed me a document that contains color text and color graphics on the same page. Word printed the graphics in color and the text in monochrome. I tried this myself and got the same result.

I studied the printer's "Advanced Document Settings" and found one named Print All Text as Black. It was set to Disabled. I tried enabling it and found that it does indeed Print All Text as Black (instead of printing colored text in shades of grey).

Can you go to Devices and Printers, right click and choose Printing preferences, then click the Color tab? Is there a checkbox to print in Grayscale? Any color controls?

I have an HP and installed the Vista driver for it (CP2020) and I have no problems printing colored text. You might check to see if your printer has a Vista driver if it doesn't have one for Win 7.

No, Kim, I can't -- because there is no Color tab. Here's what I get.

    HPcolor.png

However, note the "Image Color Management" group of settings, which seem to indicate that the driver knows about color and knows it is talking to a color printer. I mentioned this in the follow-up to my OP.

I looked at all of the tabs it provided, but none of the others mention color.

OK, I was afraid of that. I didn't like the UPD, which is why I was happy that HP had a Vista driver for my printer.

Does this topic at HP address your issue at all? (By the way, I've searched for topic 1399542 and HP seems to have lost the link.)

Yes, that did it. Thank you!

To save other users the trouble of chasing down a link that might disappear, I'll summarize the instructions here:

Open the "Devices and Printers" window.

Right-click the printer and select "Printer Properties."

    Select the "Device Settings" tab.

Scroll to the bottom and set "Device Type" to "Color" (instead of the default, "Auto Detect").
