    Deleting temporary Internet files

    In Internet Explorer 9, when I go to Tools/Internet options/Browsing history and click on "Delete", the contents of the location where the temporary files are stored ["C:\Users\Youngs\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Windows\T emporary Internet Files"] still shows 617MB of data, 17,806 files and 79 folders. If these are really temporary files, why are they not deleted? I have plenty of room on my 1TB HDD but I am curious about this. When I do a chkdsk or a File Optimization in System Mechanic this just adds to the time to complete the task.

    Any light anyone can shed on this situation would be much appreciated!

    Do you leave the option to Preserve favorites website data checked?

    You might also try CCleaner or Privacy Mantra to assist with deleting files.

    In the prehistoric era of the Internet (aka the 1990s), broadband speeds were very rare. The TIF folder was used to cache pieces of the web sites you visited. The next time you visited the site if the saved piece had not changed the browser would display the cached version thus avoiding the "slow" download speed thereby making your browsing speed appear faster. The files in the TIF folders would be replaced or overwritten as needed using an algorithm that only the browser vendor knows. Browsers still operate the same way today. With todays download speeds as long as your have a broadband connection you can safely reduce the size of the TIF. I use 50MB on my systems.

    @Exiled

    To set the size of the folder:

    Internet options/general/browsing history/settings

    Instead of using the "Delete" button in the Browsing History section use the "Settings" button.

    When you open the Delete Browsing History Dialog (the one where you actually delete the files), this is the very first option, at the top of the dialog.

    May I butt in here to ask, where would I find Preserve favorites website data? I've had IE 9 for a long time and I've never seen that option.

    You will find that in Tools/Internet Options/Browsing history/Delete... It is the first option at the top.
