    ok, some test results

    summary -
I tried to hibernate, got black screen, then back to desktop.

then did the tests (part of them)
first , htere are no LastWake states.
it never GOT to sleep, it always stayed awake, I guess

SUSPEND states, all seem to exist exist S2; informational stated that S2 was not really needed

    Devices -
here is a partial list of the energy report (the powercfg -ENERGY operation)
actualy no programs existed in here (Jungledisk did, but it was in midst of backup; it then disappeared on a subsequent report)

I did not do the ARMED or DISABLE, not sure what to do with the command of
powercfg -devicedisablewake "exact name of device"
(disable and re-enable listed device: Respectively)
(hwat is being disabled, and what to renable?)

COMMENT, USB items have been an issue noted before, BUT never posed a problem as the Hibernate worked for 1 and 1/2 years !

    any further fedback appreciated
    NIck

Do you have a Rage 128 Pro PF AGP 4x video card? It seems that the devices causing the issue are numbered 4396 and 4397, which according to this site, correspond to said video card.

i will have to check the machine later today.
if so, then what to do with it, because even if it is in machine, there has been no problem for past 1 and 1/2 years.

It may have been a driver change that caused this. One thing you can do is try a new driver to see if it helps. If not, maybe go back to an older driver.

Do you have any USB mass storage devices connected to the PC?

    USB devices
none are attached at the time of attempted hibernation.
I use USB devices for backup, BUT I dismount them and power them down, after backups, and no USB devices shw up in the usb-disconnect icon in the tray,

I just saw this on an AMD support forum, about the ati radeon 4200:

There have been reported issues with the Power Management functionality in Win7 x64 (I know I have some related problems on one of my machines but not the other) for some motherboards, that seem to be resolved by going to the Power Management tab of various hardware components (e.g. USB Root Hub, LAN adapter, etc.) Properties, and un-checking the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" item. I know that worked for me on the one machine I'd been having trouble getting Win7 to shut down on or to go into hibernation.

I would suggest that you try this and see if it helps. I would probably try it just for USB root hubs.

What results for you get if you run powercfg like you did before? Still shows the same devices as problematic?

oops, i did not try that, but i did try to hibernate, and that failed,
i will go back and try that

    QUESTION
is there a TRACE progrm that would track what actually runs, (services, etc) from the moment you click on HIBERNATE?

    HIbernate Broken, PAIN doubled..

    http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1402...resume-issues/

see this thread; it relates to TRACING power issues.
I Tried to work with this thread, but I am now in way over my head..
    I got a report generated;
here is part of it, in the log

But I have no clue what any of it means (this is only partial; there is a more complex report generated).

    I have checked my BIOS, all power states are enabled; my POWER setings allow hibernate;

it is totally bizarre, as all this worked for 1 year, then just stopped working for hibernate, after a copule microsoft updates and a copule program updates, and I can't recollect exactly which ones.

any other help appreciated, and if any awareness of simpler tracing methods, it ouwld be apreciated.

Hibernate, Pain, NOW WORKS, this is BIZARRE !!

ok, i inadvertently hit hte HIbernate function, instead of shutdown (machine for past month has NOT hibernated at all, and I did NOTHING to it to cause this).
TODAY, when inadvertently hitting the hibernate button, it actually HIBERNATED !!!
AND, AGAIN, NOTHING NEW was done to the machine to change it; I did not add any new software, etc.

I will monitor it to see if it stays working, but wanted to pass this on, just to prove the absurdity of microsoft's operating system, where it decides on a whim if it want s to work or not !!

    off to more testing...

Those things happen and are quite frustrating. At least I hope it stays that way.
