Question Updating Images In Word 2003?

    How?
How can I force Word2003 to update an image in a word document?
I've got an image in a word document, I went to my image prog, and changed it - saving it under the SAME NAME, but I can't see how to make Word 2003 update it.
Even closing the document and reopening it doesn't do it.
I know I can delete it and reinsert it and then it'd be the updated version - but surely we can do it more easily than that?
I think we used to be able to, but I can't find the way to do it now.
Is it something to do with embedding the image???

    Hi Fran,

When you inserted the image, did you insert it as a link? If not, the inserted image is completely independent of the one on disk. If you did insert it as a link, you need to check Word's 'Update automatic links at open' option (Tools|Options|General) for the links to update automatically; otherwise you'll need to select the image and press F9.
    Cheers,

I just inserted the image as an image. I then added a hyperlink - obviously this is not the right way to do it.
So, how do I insert the image so that it IS updateable?

In the Insert>Picture dialog, the insert button has a drop-down with the option to link to the image.

I'm sorry, but I still can't find any such thing.
    This is what I see:

Do you then see something different?

After you choose From File, you get the Insert Picture dialog. After selecting the image, look next to the Insert button, as noted in the attached screen shot.

    Yes!!! Yes yes yes!
Thank you so much. I've been inserting pictures for so many years, I never thought to look there, I looked in all the menus, but just never thought of that actual last to be clicked button.
    Thanks you so much jscher2000.

In Word 2003, the Link option adds the picture via an "INCLUDEPICTURE" field code. If you toggle the view of field codes (Alt-F9), you can see and modify the field code(s) if you, say, change the location of the linked picture file. The \d switch can be added (if it is not included from your dialog selection) to have the field code always get the picture from the source rather than keep a copy in the Word file. This ensures that the picture will always be current, plus it reduces the file size.
