Starting Excel Changes Clipboard (2000 SR-1)

Win 98SE. Whenever I start Excel, it sort of copies a .bmp to the clipboard. This, of course, erases whatever else was in the clipboard. The bmp looks like a small folder with a checkmark inside. I say "sort of" because if I try to paste, nothing pastes. Perhaps it's more accurate to say it just erases the clipboard.

The reason I know that a bitmap is copied is that I have a clipboard extender that can capture it (Smartboard 2000). However, this problem occurs even if the extender is not active. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Phil,

This clipboard clearing is a 'feature of Excel, and arises regularly in this forum. Carrying out any operation in Excel other than pasting tends to clear the clipboard, or at least Excel does not allow pasting to a cell. This seems only to happen if the contents of the clipboard can be pasted as a cell value. If the clipboard contains an object it usually can be pasted.

I personally think it is a deliberate feature to prevent inadvertant pasting of values into cells, which might go unnoticed in a large spreadsheet full of data.

Thanks, Andrew. I don't use Excel that often, but I should have checked for previous posts <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>. I've pasted from Excel to Word, but wasn't until I tried it the other way around that I noticed it. I should have asked sooner (I've been removing add-ins, renaming & moving book.xls, etc.).
