Windows 7 switches from Aero to Basic when using VLC or other media players

I get this annoying issue when playing videos with VLC or Windows Media Player. The software work fine for awhile and then
when trying to play a new video, the video will not work - but the sound still works. I get a warning popup, telling me that the color scheme has been reset to basic. I am supposed to shut down the application and this will reset the video - this usually does not work.

I then reboot, and everything works for awhile, until the next occurrence.

There is some noise on different forums about this, but there does not seem to be any real solution.

Does anybody have a solution for this?

    Thanks, Amos

    Welcome to the Lounge,

Do you have up to date video drivers?

Hi Amos, your pc might need more RAM to run these apps. or as Rui stated + display drivers.

Hello there - I just ran Uniblue's DriverScan 2011 - and according to their scan,
my drivers are up to date. I have enough RAM.

You might start by examining other programs you have installed on your system just prior to this happening.
The fault is not with VLC or Media player. I'm almost certain it's not your hardware, although more info would be helpful.
If you have a very week system, specifically graphics, then you could run into issues with aero...maybe.

You will also need to go into the event viewer and see if you can track down an error that is related to the time this occurs.
From the "run" box type in "eventvwr.msc" without the quotes, go to "Administrative Events".

I have one program (DVD2AVI) that will temporarilly stop aero while it is running, despite having a beefy system with a potent PCIe GPU card.

The graphics adapter is a variation of the Intel XMA 4500, which is also have on my laptop and there it works normally.
Did you usually check available memory when running the player, both when it works properly and when it doesn't? Did this ever worked normally?

Thanks - I will try to do all this (if I am able to)
Two more questions. When Aero stops, I get a message about it and instructions to stop the application, and it will reset itself.
This sometimes works, but most of the time I just reboot. So I am not sure if the application actually stops running when I close it, or there
    is additional memory leaks...?

This I think that this all started happening after one of the windows updates - too far back to figure out - so it may be
related to an update fo some sorts?

Also thank you very nuch for your time and knowledge. Amos

It would be interesting to explore the app behavior when this happens, especially regarding memory. The specific error message may also be of use.

Windows updates sometimes also offer driver updates. I think this may be related to a video driver, but I may be wrong.

I just noticed that the Video Archtecture for the Video Adapetr is VGA -

I switched some time ago from VGA to DMI - could this be the culprit?

You mean you switched from VGA to HDMI? How exactly did you do that? Changed cables between video adapter and computer?

Sorry, just trying to understand what you mean.

    Yes -
My computer has only VGA and HDMI ports.
I upgraded to a Dell 24 inch monitor that had VGA and DMI only.
I bought a HDMI to DMI adapter through Amazon, and switched to DMI - the idea was that I would get a better
    monitor resolution.
It works fine, although I see no real difference.
I wonder if I should go back...

You can try, even if I wouldn't really see that as being the cause for the issues, but you can always try and rule it out.
