    Programs won't autostart

For my data backup I use AllSync. There is a scheduler, which should be active in the systray and start a backup by windows shutdown. Now after every system start the scheduler is inactiv. I tried to put in in the folder autostart, that won't help. I also created a entry in the registry, which should be created by the scheduler itself. Don't work.

Yesterday I found accidentely a second program which won't start automatically. It's companionLink. I checked that it starts with Windows, but it won't.

I use Windows 7, 64 bits, McAfee Internet Security. McAfee says that there are no blocked programs. I asked in several forum (in German), but no help. Do you have an idea?

Are these simple programs that run on their own or do they rely on services that need to be running as well?

They don't need services. In the meantime I deinstalled / reinstalled McAfee completely (with the McAfee support). Now the program CompanionLink is in the systray - perfect. But AllSync won't start automatically. The entry in the registry is there.

I would try uninstalling McAfee and installing Microsoft Security Essentials.
Give it a try and if problem still occurs re-install AllSinc in case it has been corrupted.

I deinstalled McAfee again and then tried to start the scheduler with windows. Even without McAfee it won't. So I reinstalled McAfee again, because it's not the problem. Do you have more ideas?

Why don't you use the Task Scheduler to schedule the scheduler?

How would that work? I've never heard about a Task Scheduler. Apart from that I didn't use it because in that Scheduler I check the box "start with windows", that's it. And it worked fine for 2 or 3 years.
I tried it and planned the AllSync start for tomorrow. We will see. Nevertheless it's not the right way, I think.

I don't know what AllSync requires to start, so can't really know what is happening with it. You can always try something like msconfig or AutoRuns to see if there is an entry for it. If it is and it's checked, probably nothing of this will help. It may even be possible that AllSync is starting and just fails.

Actually the program starts now with the Task Scheduler. It's not perfect but almost. Now I would like to ask the question in a different way:

I have the program AllSync in the autostart folder, but it won't start. It starts, when I click on it in that autostart folder.

Do you have any idea what could prevent the program from starting?

Hard to say. Did you try msconfig? Does it show there?
Did you check Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> Applications for any AllSync error messages?

It is actually twice in msconfig:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\AllSync\AllSync.exe" -S -a -ws HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    C:\PROGRA~2\AllSync\AllSync.exe -S -a C:\User\Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Sta rt Menu\Programs\Startup

In the Event Viewer there are only a view information messages, the last one from 24.11.2011. There should be a bunch of errors...

    Information (Windows Error Report)
    Code:
    Fehlerbucket 2538641726, Typ 5
    Ereignisname: AppHangB1
    Antwort: Nicht verfügbar
    CAB-Datei-ID: 0

    Problemsignatur:
    P1: AllSync.exe
    P2: 3.4.0.62
    P3: 4cbd5568
    P4: 0f39
    P5: 6144
    P6:
    P7:
    P8:
    P9:
    P10:
And then I found one Application Hang from the 5.11.2011. That's long ago... Basically there is nothing special.

I would think the issue is specific to AllSync. Can you check with the manufacturer's support if there is anything that could affect the auto starting of the app?

He tried to help me and asked me now to ask somewhere else. He has no idea why a program in the autostart folder wouldn't start. That's why I'm here where the real specialists are

Well I can't explain it . Using Task Scheduler is just a valid option as using the AutoStart folder and you actually have more options if you use it.

It's never totally satisfying when you can't explain something, I know, but sometimes you just go with the solutions you find .
