Why is doc created by Word 2010 called Word 2007?

When I create documents with my Microsoft Word 2010, the resulting file says "Type: Word 2007 Document"
Can anyone explain this and offer a remedy?

It appears that your default save type is set to Word 2007. Try changing it at File | Options | Save.

'Save' doesn't give me a choice of Word versions...it is currently set to save as 'word document'

I don't have word 2010 but I suspect that it uses the *.docx format as defualt. This format was introduce in Word 2007. There should be a drop down list of the other word format options if you click on the down arrowhead to the right of "Save files in this format" At least it does in Word 2007.

The drop down list gives various options, none of which is word 2007 or word 2010.
I've tried saving in various formats, but all say "word 2007 document", instead of word 2010 which was actually used.

There is no Word 2010 format. As I stated above, the default "Word Document" format is the docx format introduced in Word 2007. The format type is independent of the specific program used to save it. I assume you are refering to the type field in Windows Explorer. If you save a document in the .doc format, the type field should show "Word97-2003".

Using Save as Word Document, should save it in W2010 format. The proof would be that "[Compatibility Mode]" would no longer be in the title bar.

Also, when the document is in the compatibility mode, you have an opportunity to convert the file (sorry, I'm using W2007 right now, & don't recall the specifics)**.

Also note that if you upgraded to W2010 and kept your old normal.docm, Word will create 2007-version files. If you want it to create W2010 files, open normal.dotm and convert it. Or, if you don't mind losing your customizations, rename normal.dotm (with Word closed) and allow Word to create a new one the next time you open Word.

**Added (Now that I'm home and using W2010): Go to File > Info. The first item on the page briefly describes the reason for the Compatibility Mode. Click the button to the left of the description to convert the file to a W2010 docx file.

I still can't solve the problem, but it is I suppose,a minor one; In summary, the fact that I create docs in Word 2010, but the file name says created in Word 2007; more of an irritation than anything...

Can you tell us what you've done to try to solve the issue? For example, have you tried to convert normal.dotm into a 2010 file?

Open Word. Click File > Open > Templates (at the top of the pane on the left), then click normal (or normal.dotm, depending on how you have Windows Explorer configured).

If [Compatibility Mode] appears in the title bar, go to the next step. If not, close normal.dotm and post back.

Step 2: Click File > Convert. And click OK when the warning dialog appears. Save and close normal.dotm. All new documents will be in W2010 format.

For existing .docx files that you want to be in the 2010 format, follow step 2.

When I get to templates, there is normal.dotm and normalOld.dotm. Normal.dotm does not have compatability mode in the title bar, but normalOld does. I converted normalOld, but docs still say word 2007 in title.

Thanks, but I tried that yet old and new docs still say "Type:Word 2007 document"

Are you using a template other than normal.dotm to create your documents? (Click File In the Info section, under Properties on the right side of the screen, the name of the attached template should be shown.) As with normal.dotm, if that template is a W2007 file, any file created from it will be in W2007 format.

Also, when you click the button to convert one of your W2007 files to W2010, does the [Compatibility Mode] notice on the title bar go away (IOW, does it become a W2010 file)?

By the way, in Word help, the articles "Open a Word 2010 document in an earlier version of Word" and "Compatibility changes between versions" may be helpful to you.
