    XP Install Fails

Attempting to install WinXP Home Edition Upgrade over WinME. I have approximately 4.8Gig of disk available on a 300Mhz AMD machine.

The install hangs with the following conditions:
Activity boxes in lower right freeze.
    The progress meter stops.
My Hard drive light remains constantly lit.
This condition lasted for about six hours before I rebooted and went through the uninstall process. I'm now back to WinME.

There was no screen activity and no error messages appeared.
I have attempted the install process three times with the exact same results.

I defragged my disk prior to installation and have removed all anti-virus software.

    HELP!

You may have 'strange' hardware - keyboard? video card? sound?

    Re: XP Install Fails

Remove all your extra hardware that didn't originally come with the PC (USB devices, modems, even network cards). I would recommend backing up your critical files, and using your crash disk to take that sucker right back to the way it was out of the box. Then upgrade to XP. Readd all your devices once the install completes. Sounds like a lot, but it beats watching an illuminated hard drive light for 6 hours....
